Netherlands star Martens retires

31-year-old leaves international fold with 146 caps

Winger to focus on Paris Saint-Germain career

The Hague AFP Dutch women's football star and Paris Saint-Germain forward Lieke Martens on Tuesday announced her retirement from the international game.

"With great pride and emotion I can today announce that I will retire from international football after the friendly matches in June," she wrote on Twitter.

Martens retires with 146 caps for her country, scoring 56 goals.

She is a two-time Dutch player of the year and was named UEFA Women's Player of the Year in 2017.

Martens was part of the Netherlands team that won the 2017 European Championship and finished runners-up at the 2019 World Cup.

She is now set to focus on her club career with French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Martens joined PSG in 2023 after leaving Barcelona, where she won three league titles and the 2021 Champions League.

Her departure from the international stage will be a blow to the Netherlands, but it will also allow her to focus on her club career as she targets more success with PSG.
